Jul 13, 2018 · Here are my brainstorm/plans for the "city block" print. - 4 lane trains (2+2, right hand drive) - include power (Big power pole) - include green/red signal. - 1 station in north for "player" (for at least a 5 length train) My plan for the "1 station" print (Typical smelter block) - 1 station in the left of the block for input.City blocks really shine when you're playing a big overhaul mod. They help impose a structure on the unfamiliar recipies and processes ahead. These overhaul mods often have very complicated recipes, with a lotta moving parts. Do you really want a dozen trains parked up in a block, all slowly emptying? Inefficient! So far, I have a modded spaghetti base where most of the science materials are hand-fed. I'm looking to have my more permanent base be a city block design. I was thinking either 3x3 or 6x6 chunk blocks. My main question is whether to go for a 2-lane (1 per direction) or 4-lane (2 per direction) rail network. You need a bunch of block types, first off the standard layout that you want to go with. A common layout is a square of 4x4 big electric poles plus the roboports in each quarter of the layout. Good thing to have a concrete/brick edge. Then you also need the rail layouts. Regarding the resource calculation, if you are not using mods like Factorio Planner, I'd go big. Make each block create as many resources as possible, so that you can fill a train fast. If you have many trains incoming, you don't want them waiting for too long.I've build a 10k railbase @ 60ups too, but mine did have cheaty mining. Most people building who use UPS as the most important metric do this by the way. It is something completely different then playing the base game. Nothing to do with playing factorio, but more of a optimizing challenge. How to get item for A to B in as little as UPS ...The trick with it is having it not become a giant traffic jam as the amount of production goes up. It helps if you can keep most deliveries fairly local. e.g. a ton of your green circuits go right into making red circuits, so if those production areas are far apart then it generates a lot more train traffic across the whole grid. 3.Adding left turn lanes inside the circle helps a lot. Good base design also makes a difference. If trains rarely need to turn left, it doesn't matter which intersection you use. Using chain signals to break up long runs also makes a difference. 2. To prevent this, we place signals along the track and at crossings. Signals split the tracks into different parts called blocks. The signals then ensure that only one train can be in each block. Any signal leading into an already …City blocks are chunks of a factory of some predetermined size, commonly 100x100 connected up with rails or roboports. Makes expansion easy as you can just copy/paste a whole block, but wastes a lot of space as many things won’t fill up a whole block. Fun concept to play with and trying blocks of various sizes per map.I'm trying a city block plan for the first time. 4x4 chunks bordered by a two-lane train system. Oil never runs out in vanilla. It gets uselessly slow after a while, but it is infinite. Coal liquification always requires some token advanced oil processing, since one needs heavy oil to jumpstart it.They must be able to go any direction from any direction for it to work the best. Limiting them to just right and straight will ultimately doom your train pathing. Also using that size you get a 6x6 chunk area inside each grid square to build in. I found that to be a very nice size even with 2-4-2 trains. You can also use non-rail city blocks early and mid game. Just keeps everything organized. For example, having 2 blocks dedicated to iron production and 1 block dedicated to circuits and so on. By dedicating a block to circuits for example, you will have plenty of room to expand circuit production when needed without running into any other builds.Sep 24, 2020 ... The train tracks form the boundaries of each block and train stations represent input and output, each with one or more products handled. Depending on your design philosophy you may choose to link adjacent blocks with high-throughput belts or bots, or stick to trains exclusively. Those would need larger city-blocks in smelting section - ~120 tiles and ~200 tiles respectively. Make sure to actually design your train system before you take those numbers for granted though :) In my previous non-city block 2k SPM megabase I used 11-16-0 trains for ore, 5-8-0 for plates, coal and oil, 3-4-0 for everything else. You need a bunch of block types, first off the standard layout that you want to go with. A lot of the community prints tend to keep city blocks to a 100x100 square or 3x3 chunk, which are for smaller, more-frequent trains rather than longer trains. 2.I'm not very experienced, but from the two I've built I think I would not go with a simple square grid and instead one where each block offset the one above and below by half. This way I don't have to suffer with 4 way train intersections. But I haven't built it, yet. As for size, I think next time I'll build a template that places the power ...City blocks are best when paired with point-to-point distribution systems (i.e., trains, transport drones, etc.). Get your train system set up first, then transition to a city block design. Have each city block designed to make one type of thing, with any inputs supplied entirely by your train network. 1.I've set out city blocks which cover 4 roboports with a small gap to separate each logistic network. This means I have to train supplies to a block for building but it's automated using a requester warehouse on the mall and a 'construction' train station that I build onsite so it's not that big a deal.I working toward a 1000spm mega base, and my base is basically city block style. The way I designed it, a block makes one thing only. For example the Speed Module1 block, I have three train stations. Each station takes up a whole side of the city block. Each block is the size of 1 roboport logistics coverage! Obviously the blocks themselves do not have train stations inside the production areas, even 1-1 trains would not fit. But the loading / unloading stations are each a block and sit adjacent to the production. City block, itself, is not "optimal", it's just standardized. Pick a train length and see how large a green circuit design that feels appropriate for that train length would be. Landfill water, build over ore. This saves expensive roboports, and you can always add more if doing a bot build. Also, you can easily segment your city blocks into different networks by moving the roboports 1 tile away from where they would connect. When doing this, you’ll notice it leaves a 1 tile gap between 2 networks. You can place inserters here and move items from ...I had several blocks with 1000-2000 value before, but those were mostly clusters of recharge stations. Hence the mod to eliminate recharging. So it's easy to start with them early, and organize your base better. Other style city blocks use rails as the block borders, specifically for high throughput bases, so they start much later into the run.I am now on my fifth version of a pyramid-inspired city block train world.
