They tear the center out of the shell, which will cause it to spin on the shaft and lose reverse gear. They've been a weak link in the 700R4/4L60E's for years. Long story short, old transmission is shot, new transmission that was a fresh build, will not engage any forward gears. Reverse works perfectly. Truck is running and when putting it in reverse the t the low/reverse clutches are in the rear of the case. odds are, you wont have any trouble identifying the problem once you get to them. when you do a rebuild on this trans, make sure you get an EPC solenoid as part of the parts you buy to rebuild the trans. that will help correct the hesitation on the shifts. other things you are going to want to address while your in the trans is most likely ...
